Reefer and Hazmat Container Drayage: What You Need to Send With the Load

Temperature-controlled and placarded freight require shipment-specific equipment and documentation. The documentation and details that keep a specialized container moving.

Reefer and hazmat container moves require both suitable equipment and complete shipment information. Confirm temperature, power, classification and documentation requirements before booking to avoid preventable delays.

Reefer containers

A refrigerated container arrives with a set point and a genset or plug-in requirement. What dispatch needs before the pull:

  • Set point temperature and whether it is Fahrenheit or Celsius
  • Whether the box needs a genset for the road move
  • Plug-in availability at the delivery point and how long it can stay powered
  • Receiving hours — perishables rarely tolerate an overnight wait at a closed dock
  • Who to call if the unit alarms in transit

Cold freight is a scheduling problem as much as a transport problem. If the consignee cannot receive on the day the container is available, the container needs a powered plan, not a parking spot.

Hazmat containers

Placarded freight requires the paperwork and the driver qualification to line up before the truck reaches the gate. What must be in hand:

  • Correct shipping papers with proper shipping name, UN number, hazard class and packing group
  • Emergency response information and a 24-hour contact
  • Placards matching the commodity actually in the container
  • Any terminal or facility restriction on the class being moved

D&G runs hazmat-endorsed drivers and holds a customs bond for in-bond freight. Our identifiers are USDOT 3247657, MC 1046040 and SCAC DGPK — send those to your forwarder or terminal when they need carrier details on file.

Overweight and in-bond considerations

Heavy imports and bonded moves both add routing constraints. Overweight containers need the right chassis configuration and a legal route; bonded freight needs the in-bond documentation to travel with the container and to be closed correctly at destination. Flag both at quote time so the move is planned once instead of re-planned at the gate.

Frequently asked

Do you supply gensets for reefer container moves?
Genset requirements are confirmed per move at quote time. Tell dispatch the set point and whether power is available at the delivery point so the equipment is planned before the pull.
What paperwork must travel with a hazmat container?
Shipping papers with the proper shipping name, UN number, hazard class and packing group, plus emergency response information and a 24-hour contact. Placards must match the commodity in the container.
